Conference on the review of scientific and technological activities during 2006 - 2010 and future directions (2011 - 2015) of Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development

On 11th August 2011, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) held a conference to review the scientific and technological activities performed during 2006 - 2010 and to present the future research and development tasks for 2011 - 2015. Deputy Prime Minister, Nguyen Thien Nhan was the guest of honour and Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Cao Duc Phat directed the conference.

The goal of Science and Technology has been to increase commodity output from agriculture through a focus on high yield, quality and effectiveness, and through achieving a stable and sustainable development all based on applying advanced scientific and technological achievements. The overall aim has been to limit inflation and ensure social security for farmers in rural areas and to that effect science and technology have contributed positively and been a driving force in the growth of agriculture. During the conference, RIA1 exhibited posters and distributed leaflets and brochures of the achievements and products, which the science and technology projects had resulted in. In addition live common carp (V1), tilapia, ca lang, tyre track eel, fish products and medical products to combat diseases in shrimp and fish were also displayed, which attracted many delegates.
The Department of Science and Technology opened the conference by presenting “Report of MARD on the science and technology in the 2006 - 2010 period and the future orientation for 2011 - 2015” and the

“Summary report of the Biotechnology program for the 2006 - 2010 period” followed be a presentation of the National Agricultural Extension Centre on “Agricultural Extension report for the 2006 - 2010 period”. After this, general contributions were given by the sector institutes present such as Vietnam Academy of Agricultural Sciences; Vietnam Academy for Water Resources; Forest Science Institute of Vietnam and Research Institute for Aquaculture No.1, 2 and 3; National Research Institute of Animal Science; Research Institute for Animal Health; Vietnam Institute of Agricultural Engineering and Post-Harvest Technology and finally Institute of Policy and Strategy for Agriculture and Rural Development.Science and technology have always been prioritised measures in the activities of agriculture and rural development to achieve both fast and high quality results. Therefore, the National budget for science and technology within agriculture and rural development increased with an average of 11% per year during 2006 to 2010. The Government and MARD created improved the mechanisms and policies to facilitate the legal framework for scientific and technological development activities. The organizational structure of the sector research institutes under MARD has been rearranged and merged to achieve improved effectiveness.
