Course objectives

To provide systematic & practical knowledge on techniques of mono-sex tilapia seed production and grow-out. The broodstock management and seed quality aspect will also be introduced to optimize production cost and sustainable development for tilapia hatchery and farming.

Course schedule

Duration: Two weeks and a half, during March—May or Sept—November.

Number of participants: 10-20


- Class-room lectures: 6 days

- Practices (e.g. egg collection, classification, feed preparation, feeding): 2 days

- Broodstock selection, evaluation and environmental monitoring: 1 day

- Field-trip: 3 days

- General discussion: 0.5 day

Expected outcome

- Produce mono-sex tilapia population with high quality

- Apply grow-out tilapia technology in different production systems

- Optimize production costs and maximize benefits from tilapia hatchery and farming

- Produce safe tilapia products

- Understand other aspects in tilapia production and processing

- 3,000 -4,000 USD/participant/course  (for lecturers, administration, domestic travel, chemical, material for practice, accommodation, meals...)

Module 2. Review of biological characteristics of Nile Tilapia and its application

- Feed and feeding strategies

- Reproductive biology and spawning strategies

- Hatchery and farm management principle in term of biological aspect

Module 3. Hatchery requirement and design for all male seed production

- Production planning and implementation

- Hatchery designing

Module 4. Broodstock management and selection, broodstock fattening
